Spoilers ahoy, peeps.

A not super organized review of Kings Rising, with spoilers. A warning: while I am mostly positive about this book, there are some things that I didn't care for, so this is not a completely squee-filled review.

KINGS RISING!!!! IS FINALLY HERE!!!!! )

So I'm having one of those weekends where everything is the next big idea for writing, except that I haven't been writing much because the end of the year is when school goes from being an 8 hour a day job to a 10-12 hour a day job and I end up coming home and laying facedown on the couch and rewatching Ouran High School Host Club.

Only now I'm on SUMMER! And I'm excited and also relieved and also can't wait for the new school year!

Not sure how this will go over but I'm offering drabbles to those interested. Post and you shall receive.

Super sad about the game last night. Right after the OT goal, Lundquist just lay face down on the ice, and you could tell that he was just crushed (which is not really unexpected given that the Rangers rely on him so much).

Although it was hilarious since my BB was in LA and kept texting me things like, "If my car gets destroyed in a riot, I will call you" and "there are cops outside in riot gear, expecting a riot."

Spent the whole day catching up on minor to do items and also playing video games with the boy. Read two trades that I'd rented from the library forever ago and realized that I'm definitely not the same comic reader I was as a kid.

I have pretty much only been able to balance a couple of new shows this season. We don't have cable and I honestly don't have time to watch like I used to, so Hulu plus and Netflix streaming is it.

However, I have been in love with Almost Human. I think (other than the obvious ROBOTS WITH HUMAN SOULS AND WHAT MAKES A PERSON AND OMG ALL THE THINGS AND MICHAEL EALY) what gets me about this show is how it is very, very procedural, while also having some interesting (if not particularly ground breaking) sci-fi conversations. There's a lot to pick apart. And a lot of it is because of the actors and Urban and Ealy being genuinely fabulous at their job. And some of it is that show writers are playing with interesting concepts.

Also Mindy Project. I know the show can kind of be problematic, but to be honest, I relate to Mindy and am really, really happy with this professionally successful, internet loving, food eating person that Kaling is playing. I feel like so often we see "girlish" as weak and Mindy Project kind of puts that on its head, by having her be successful and competent. Moreover, I do like that they changed direction early on with Danny and that their friendship grew really organically and we got to see what they like in each other and how they fit.

So apparently Google notifier is going away? Which is super annoying, because I still use it as a way of checking email without actually checking email. :(

Anyone have anything similar to notifier? And not the Chrome add on, because I don't use Chrome.

Anyone have a link/download of the Agent Carter Marvel one shot? I can't find a full version anywhere. :(

Since it's the start of a new year, I've been thinking of what I want to accomplish this coming year. I have some solid progress on the Greek God!AU, so my goal is to finish and edit that by the middle of the year and also write a few more fics than I did last year.

What about you, flist? Writing goals?

I love this time of year, when you see all the Yuletide authors coming out of hiding, and there's so many moments of, "Oh, so you wrote ____??? I LOVED ______!!"

I didn't get as much chance to do anon reading, but there were a lot of good fics this year!

I managed to catch a pinch hit this year and I wrote an Elementary HDM fusion for [personal profile] unfinishedidea, which was a ton of fun! None of it would have been finished without [personal profile] oxoniensis. She was such a huge help with brainstorming and betaing I don't think it would have been finished without her.

Title: A Life Undiscovered
Author: girl_wonder
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters here.

Summary: Joan Watson navigates her new situation. HDM fusion.

There was something intimate about looking into Sherlock’s unsolved case files.

A couple of days ago, I finished the long-long-long belated second draft of the unnamed steampunk pirates YA novel and now I'm at loose ends? I'm not sure where to go from here because it's the first time finishing something hasn't meant "post it to all the communities and archives that apply".

Anyone have any advice?

OUAT

I finally realized what drives me nuts about Once Upon A Time. It wasn't the same flames on the side of my face fury I felt when I quit Supernatural, probably because I've never been particularly invested in Once Upon A Time. OUAT was my guilty Sunday "Oh, look pretty people and reasonably silly plots!" pleasure. But over time, episodes have begun making me angrier and angrier and I think it's because the central idea of OUAT is that Family Is The Only Thing That Matters. Only OUAT has a very strict definition of family and that is biological parents to their biological children.

For me, it started when Henry (who had been raised since infancy by Regina) defined only Emma as his "mother." I'm not saying that being raised by an evil queen would be awesome, but it looked like Regina was doing her best to be a good mother, and had been his mother as long as anyone in Storybrooke knew. The show explicitly, over and over again, hammers home the point that bio parents are the only real parents.

There is not a single instance in the show where a step-parent or adoptive parent was considered a "real" parent. Regina was evil to Snow White (when a more interesting twist would have been Snow and Regina against Snow's evil father, or even a "Snow, Glass and Apples" approach to it). Charming's twin's father was evil to the core.

Which, yeah, they're drawing from source material that makes step parents pretty evil, but at the same time, they're trying to deconstruct and reimagine the fairy tales that they're using as templates. They make all the heroines baddass and strong, yet they can't seem to value anything other than a nuclear family.

ANYWAY. I was watching Leverage and Community and I realized that the central idea in the shows that I do love is created-family. The idea that it doesn't matter who your DNA comes from, the people that matter are the ones that care for you and the ones that consider you family. Even when Leverage folks meet their family (Nate and his father, Eliot and his), the importance is that they are actually cared for by their created-family. Eliot meets his father, and it's entirely off screen, and the next episode he is back with the crew as though nothing had happened.

NaNo?

Is anyone interested in a Nano support group? Just an email list where we could do daily word counts and maybe some moral support?

It wouldn't have to be for the official NaNo word count, if you wanted to aim for something lower or something more applicable to the story you're writing.

Is anyone still doing NaNo this year?

Anyone else loving the Jones/Eglamore going on in Gunnerkrigg Court cannon?

After a lot of peer pressure, I've started watching Teen Wolf. I'm about 1/2 way through the first season and I'm madly, madly in love and I have all the feels and I keep hearing it gets dark, but NO. NO DARK, JUST STILES ALL THE TIME. AND DEREK STALKING EVERYONE IN THE CAST.

A few weeks ago, I ordered Leverage season 4 from Amazon (or I thought from Amazon) it was one of those midnight buys that you don't pay much attention to, because it is literally the first one that pops up when you search "leverage season 4" on amazon.

Cue to my first clue that I did not buy from Amazon: I get an email from some random who says that he wants to make everything good and if I can just call/email him before leaving him anything less than 5 stars. I thought, "Ok, well as long as it's the dvds, we should be fine."

Today the DVDs arrived and unless TNT has really, really lowered their standards in terms of packaging/photos these are NOT legal copies. Don't get me wrong, they're good bootlegs, but one look at the cover makes it really clear that it's a photo copy of the actual cover.

You can see that is' pretty pixalated, the black isn't real black.

Photobucket

All of them look white, not caucasian, but WHITE. Including Hardison.

Of course, I immediately called Amazon, got a refund sticker and such, but now there's another question.

Do I leave a one star with the note that he sold a bootleg copy? Or do I just leave it alone? Do I call the guy and tell him he sold me a bootleg?

I should clarify, this was sold at market rate. This was sold as the Amazon copy - the only one I can see when I look at the main TV & DVD page.
