(no subject)
Jul. 3rd, 2011 02:02 pmI think the most interesting part of the whole Lord of the Rings Fanfiction Archive incident is that I'm realizing there is a cultural history that most of fandom seems to know. We know about the Kirk/Spock, we know about the fanzines, we know about the usenet groups, the wilderness pre-livejournal, the series of wankfests, we know about realizing one that you're involved in a feminism, gender identity, racefail conversation that's equivalent to a graduate course in the subject.
And the thing is, I completely understand how on the outside you can come in and see a site with thousands of hits and say, "I can make money here." I just think that as someone inside the culture I sit here and laugh at you and think about hand written stories, then typed stories, then fanzines, usenet, archives, lj, and say, "You have no idea where we're going. You have no idea how we're getting there. And thank god for that."
