Amazon not-so-local
Sep. 30th, 2011 07:30 amDid anyone else get signed up for the new Amazon Local service? I came home yesterday to 5 spam messages which I clicked through, only to wake up to 2 more. Had to cancel the subscriptions and then found out that not only had Amazon created the account for me without my knowledge, but included my credit card information, which was... kind of irritating.
Weirdly, when they signed me up, they used a county I'm currently living in and Boston. If they'd used any of the other cities I'd lived in, I'd think they had used my shipping addresses, which would would have been a competent way to determine which "local deals" should be sent to people. However, since they used Boston (a city I've never even been to, and is literally 3,000 miles away from where I am), I can only really think they either went random or are really incompetent about using the ton of information they have on me. (address, interests, books I like, movies I like, things I'm too lazy to go to Best Buy to purchase)
Also, I love that they sent me a deal to a haunted house, since knowing my county, it's probably one of those Christian haunted houses where the punchline is a one armed man yelling "And that's why you never abort a baby!" Way to be off the mark, Amazon.
PS: Does anyone know how to get rid of my account without getting rid of my whole Amazon account?
