Last night I finally watched Fringe 4x02 with mom, which was hilarious because she's never watched Fringe before, but I love it and she's open to liking it. However, having to explain 3 seasons of plot and world building is kind of hard. I really don't know how new people would start watching this show.

Mom: What is she talking about?

Me: Well, last season, the other Olivia-

Mom: Which is the other Olivia?

Me: Uh, so the blonde is our Olivia like from our universe. And the redhead is from the other universe. So, she, the blonde, went to the other universe to rescue Peter - that guy I told you about who doesn't exist any more - and when she was there, she tried to get help from the redhead, but they fought and the redhead took her place in our universe. And she went around looking for a piece of a machine. At the same time, the blonde was brainwashed and she thought she was going crazy. So, the redhead finds a piece of a machine that the other universe is going to use to kill our universe and then she crossed back into her universe. At the same time, the blonde crossed back into our universe. And then they had a machine to destroy the universe.

Mom: The other universe.

Me: No, the other universe wanted to destroy our universe, but now that there's a bridge - well, uh, the two universes were colliding and they'd destroy each other, and so now that there's a bridge, they aren't destroying each other any more.

I think this reflects more on my inability to distill 3 seasons of plot down to its essence rather than my mom's ability to watch tv.

*claps hands* Episode 2!!

Honestly, I was a little thrown off by the plot of this episode. Mostly because it struck me as a little silly from the get go, and when they didn't have guards posted at the door to prevent him from leaving the house, I was rolling my eyes.

How did the expect him to not find out, really? It made... not a lot of sense.

On the other hand, I loved seeing the differences between the two Olivias. Now that we see them right next to each other, it becomes really clear how different they are. They're similar, but it was really clear in between the dressing and the body language that our Olivia is so... controlled all the time and quiet and aware of her own body. Her mind is quiet because she's trained it to be.

The other Olivia, without the abuse and the cortexifan, is louder, and more able to show her joy. She doesn't like waiting because she's never had to. She's never been pushed to a breaking point when she was young, so she doesn't know that sitting back and watching what other people will do is another way to control the situation.

Plus, you can see that Alt!Olivia thinks she is much, much more baddass than our Olivia. You can see that she thinks ours is white washed and straightlaced and boring. You can tell that to her, our Olivia is the less interesting version of herself. In essence, I think originally Alt!Olivia thinks she's the serial killer version and our Olivia is the professor version.

Which made it interesting when she saw our Olivia relating with the professor version of the serial killer. Here she sees the boring version of herself relating to a potential serial killer, and instead of realizing what that says about our Olivia or even about herself, she puts it down to the type of straight laced police work she thinks our Olivia does.

Instead, our Olivia looks at the Alt!Olivia, and she knows exactly what this guy means about choices, because she can tell that the alternate her is the equivalent of the professor version. The alternate her got the love and support and did not get mentally and physically tortured and experimented on as a child. Our Olivia got to learn her limits early on, she got to learn what she would do to protect herself, to protect her sister and mother.

That moment in the car was awesome because you could see that to our Olivia, this is something that every day she pushes down, every day she deals with. She doesn't forget, she always knows who she is and what she is.

To Alternate Olivia, it was like a revelation. Looking at her stuff doesn't mean that she knows everything about our Olivia. She hasn't even scratched the surface.

I wish we saw more Astrid, but that's my complaint EVERY WEEK. EVERY WEEK I WANT MORE ASTRID, DO YOU HEAR ME, SHOW?
