I haven't thought about the Hunger Games in a very long time, because I still wanted it to go:
Book 1
Book 2: Katniss is a mentor and has to work the Capitol while at the same time realizing there's an uprising coming
Book 3: Katniss leads the rebellion
And then someone wrote ficlets of Katniss as a mentor!
the one where the reaps aren't prim
The one where it is Gale and, shit, that would have been a book

(I want someone to write the weeks after the Reaping, before the Games, when Katniss is incandescently angry, Peeta is trying really hard, and Haymitch is telling them both to be practical and lkgjdf. YES.)

Yeah. I mean, Katniss and Peeta... their first games as mentors and Haymitch...
Haymitch knows how to lose. He knows how to lose because for twenty years he's been losing. Two tributes a year. Every year.
He knows how to lose.
Katniss and Peeta are vibrating, trying to impress the tributes with everything they know, trying to shove deportment and fighting and survival down their throats, trying to explain everything on the train ride and Haymitch sits and waits and watches.
He knows how the two softer ones will die. The girl, the mayor's daughter, she looks smartish, so starvation or infection. The other girl is taller, and has that sharp look kids on the edges of town get. Katniss had that look.
(Haymitch never hopes that anyone of his tributes will win because he knows they're all going to die)
So, she'll probably die when it gets time for the careers to start picking off the smart ones.
The boys... one of them's a miner through and through, he'll go fast. Not that miners are dumb, just that they haven't seen anything like the cornucopia before and that much food, that many supplies...
When you have nothing, it's hard to give up everything.
The big kid, the one that Katniss and Peeta are giving a wide berth. Him... maybe. Maybe he'll be one of the last ones. Maybe.

Katniss is still screaming and Effie is doing the only thing she knows how to do, which is talk about fashions and rich people.
"Katniss, please," Effie says. "I cannot concentrate with all that noise."
Katniss turns to her, but then Effie is out of her seat and rounds a slap on Katniss's face. "Be quiet. You are a victor and a mentor. Deport yourself as someone who wants her tongue."
Then, like nothing happened, Effie spins again and says, "I completely forgot about the Tassletons. Lovely couple. They always pick their favorites early and sometimes they choose from non-career districts."
When Cinna enters, Katniss goes nearly limp. She looks at him and says only his name. Haymitch pours himself more.
He corners her later, after Cinna has dressed her and curled her hair and made her beautiful.
"You have to choose now," he says. He opens his mouth to explain that she'll need to choose who her favorite is now because sponsors don't like 12, and now they have one chance, one to get maybe a few gifts. A few. And she'll need to decide now who she's going to give them to.
She looks at him and its one of the moments that makes him want to rip her face off because she's looking at him and she knows exactly what he means. He hates that someone knows him so well.
"Gale," she says, without hesitation.
He opens his flask. Drinks it. Offers her some and she knocks back some.
"Ok, then," he says. "Let's go do our jobs."
